The Ondo State Government is set to demolish houses blocking waterways to ensure free flow of water and prevent flooding.
This is part of the measures to be adopted by the state government to control perennial flooding in the state.
The state Acting Governor, Agboola Ajayi disclosed this in Idanre after inspecting the havoc wrecked by flood in Idanre Local Government Area of the state.
Flood occasioned by heavy downpour damaged houses and property worth millions of naira in the hilly town of Idanre on Sunday
The people of Ayede Ogbese in Akure North local government area of the state also suffered similar fate as many were rendered homeless
Ajayi, while thanking God that no life was lost, advised that people still living in the affected buildings to vacate them to prevent further preventable disasters.
He promised that the government would try its best in terms of bringing relief to the affected victims soon.
“We thank God that no life was lost. Floods not as heavy as this have killed many people elsewhere, but we thank God that such did not happen in Idanre.
“I was in Ibadan when this happened. We have inspected the houses, I will advise that our people should leave the affected houses to prevent another disaster.
“Some people built houses on the waterways; we will ensure that no matter how highly placed such people are, we will demolish their houses to have a free flow of water,” he said.
Ajayi also promised that amphibious excavator would be deployed to help channel the waterways in the town.
Aladeoku of Alade Idanre, Oba Olusegun Akinbola, said it had not happened before in the town and thanked the government for being responsive to the plight of the people.
Also, the Owa of Idanre, Oba Fedrick Aroloye, implored the government to help the affected people of the community by providing relief materials.
