The Ondo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said it has seized no fewer than 11,692kilograms of illicit drugs between January and October this year.
The state Commander of NDLEA, Haruna Gagara disclosed this at a news conference in Akure.
Ondo state South west Nigeria is one of the states with high cultivation of Indian hemp.
This is evident in the seizures made by the command every passing year.
Within ten months, a large seizure of Indian hemp, tramadol, cocaine among other substances were confiscated.
Totaling 11,692kilograms, the substances were seized at different flash points of Ondo township, Ogbese, Owo, Ore, Iju among others.
Out of 222 suspects arrested, forty two suspects have been convicted for various jail terms.
Twenty-eight female suspects were also
arrested at different locations.
The state Commander of the NDLEA said several Indian hemp farms were destroyed within the same period
The command has also reeled out patrol strategies in carrying out surveillance of operations in the state
The new strategy, according to the commander is to curb the high rate of patrol of illicit drugs during the “Ember” period in the state.
Gagara said “We have also evolved a new plan that would make our various patrol activities to achieve better now, because of those period to curtail the movement of these illicit substances in and outside the state”
