Resident Doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo have urged the state government to pay backlog of their salaries being owed them before the expiration of the ultimatum issued to government
The doctors said they would embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of the ultimatum.
The resident doctors had last Friday, staged a peaceful protest in Akure to vent their anger over their unpaid salaries.
The Governor had swiftly reacted to the protest with an approval of the payment of what the doctors were being owed.
But the Secretary General of ARD, UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Dr. Taiwo Olagbe in a statement issued on Sunday, said the doctors would embark on an indefinite strike if government fails to meet their demands.
He said it is erroneous to say that the doctors being owed were recently employed by the state government
The statement added, “First we want to commend the governor for admitting owing UNIMEDTHC Doctors this much (3-5months salaries) but it is erroneous and disturbing to say that the doctors agitating for their rights are newly employed.
“This is farce and a facade of misconception and it must be debunked and discarded in its entirety. There are some who are employed in 2018 and are being owed 3-4months.
“Government must expedite action on payment of all these Arrears and backlog of salaries before the expiration of the set deadline, so as to to avoid industrial disharmony.
“Mr Governor should be magnanimous and muster good political will to take these payments beyond social community service
“We are much willing to continue to corroborate with government in fighting the war of COVID 19 pandemic”, he assured.
