The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign in Ondo State insisted that party supporters were the victims of the unprovoked attack in Ipele on Wednesday.
The party urged the police to release their members who were unjustifiably arrested.
This was contained in a statement titled, “Akeredolu orders clampdown on PDP leaders in the northern senatorial district,” issued by Mr Samuel Fasua, on behalf of the Eyitayo Jegede Campaign Organisation, on Wednesday.
The PDP said it is concerned about the wanton disrespect for the rule of law by the Akeredolu-led APC government and its willingness to use the security agencies and thugs to harass, intimidate and cow opposition parties in the build-up to the elections.
The statement reads, “We had earlier raised the alarm that the APC had perfected plans to clamp down on known PDP leaders and to have them removed from circulation during the elections and charged them to court on trumped-up allegations. We call for the immediate release of all PDP members arrested.”
In response to allegations of bias, the state PPRO said, “There is nothing like arresting any party leader, we are not partisan, we are doing our jobs professionally. Those arrested are those that destroyed the billboards in Ipele and we are also on the trail of those that destroyed the billboard of the PDP too in the town.”
