The senator representing Ondo State central senatorial district, Ayo Akinyelure has issued a warrant of arrest against the interim management committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
Akinyelure took this drastic step owing to the failure of the NDDC management to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges which is chaired by senator who represents the Central Senatorial zone of Ondo State at the upper legislative assembly.
The senate committee had severally invited the NDDC Committee to appear before it to answer certained questions bothering on the petition written to the senate by one High Chief Sobomabo Jackrich.
The petitioner had accused the NDDC management of misappropriation and diversion of 6.2bilion naira meant for palliative to take care of the poor and indigenes of Niger Delta during the covid-19 lockdown.
The high chief however enjoined the Senate to look into the issue with a view to getting to the root of the matter and getting whoever has a hand in the fraud to answer questions.
The petitioner had earlier in December 2020 appeared before the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges which is chaired by Akinyelure to make his presentation before the committee.
An invitation was said to have sent to NDDC Committee to appear before the Senate but did not show up. Another invite was also sent on January 26 but was alleged to have produced no result.
This was said to have angered the Senate Committee chairman, Ayo Akinyelure.
While giving an update on the Issue at the Tuesday plenary, Akinyelure claimed that he has no other option than to issue a warrant of arrest against the NDDC management.
The warrant is aimed at compelling them to appear before the Senate Committee on March 9, 2021.
