The lawmaker representing Akoko North East and North West Federal Constituency in the House of representatives, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has provided free medical services to over 20,000 people in Akoko axis
The medical programme which lasted nine days, afforded indigent constituents the opportunity to access medical consultation and treatment for different ailments.
The outreach took place at five designated centers in OkeAgbe, Ogbagi, Ajowa, Ise and Ikare Akoko all in the federal constituency with a team of medical professionals conducting diagnosis, treatment for minor health conditions and enlightenment on prevention for common sicknesses like malaria, typhoid and high blood pressure.
Also, over 1000 glasses christened “Igo BTO’ were distributed to individuals with eye defects while free surgery was performed for constituents with cataract, hernia, fibroid, lypoma, Breast lump among others at the State specialist hospital in Ikare Akoko.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo who was represented on the final day of the health programme by the coordinator of the outreach, Dr Oluwatosin Dada said intervention in the health sector remains integral in his responsibility to the people.
He described the unprecedented 9 days medical outreach as an eye opener on some of the health challenges confronting the people.
He added that the team had to restrategise to accommodate all the constituents who presented themselves for examination .
The lawmaker assured that despite the free surgical operations, there will also be follow up medication and consultation for effective monitoring of recovery progress at no cost to the constituents.
“The initiative is to bring health to the doorstep of the people and this outreach has been overwhelming and an eye opener for me personally.
“We thought we were going to be targeting 2000 people per center, but we started getting over 5000 and even over 6000 in some centers leading to over 20000 people.”
One of the patients who went through surgery for her fibroid condition, Oloro Deborah from Iboropa Akoko said she had battled the challenge since 2008 before the succour provided by the federal lawmaker.
” I am usually in severe pain because of my issue, I have been to doctors but they always say it is an operation that I will have to do which has always made me afraid because I did not have any money as my husband had abandoned me. Today, Tunji-Ojo has changed my story and I am very grateful, may God continue to uplift him”
Kareem Aribisala from Ogbagi, a cataract patient and retired NSCDC officer said ” I heard that Tunji-Ojo wanted to help us, I was at the general hospital for interview and test with the doctors, thereafter, they gave me time to come for the surgery. Before now, I could not use my right eyes to see anything but I thank God I can see now”.
Another hernia patient from Ise Akoko, Ogungbemi Idowu said he could not recollect when the condition started and was already contemplating sucide before the intervention.
“Thank God for the successful surgery as I had been thinking of committing sucide if I could not do the operation eventually.
“All I can say to the person that made this possible is that God’s blessing and miracle will continue to manifest in his life” .
Other health intervention by the lawmaker include the facilities of 12 ambulances, motorcycles and multimillion medical equipment to communities in the two local government areas of the Federal Constituency.
