Senator Umar Tanko Al’Makura has been described as the formidable and appropriate personality to take over from Mai Mala Buni as the chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC).
A socio-political group, Progressives Change For Solidarity Movement Worldwide, handed down the verdict while deliberating on the need for APC to ensure the successor of Buni is someone who could manage the party adequately.
The group in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Abudulkadir Musa Bio, noted that “APC needs a dynamic, focused and self-willed leader that can galvanise and genuinely reconcile all members, stakeholders and interest groups ahead of all the 2023 general elections.
“The APC has gone through a lot of upheavals in the last couple of years and thus the need for a unifying figure that can reposition it to secure the future and sustain the gains.”
The group stated that Senator Al’Makura proved the required qualities for APC top position in 2011 as the standard bearer of Congress for Progressive Change(CPC) in Nasarawa State.
“I a deft political prowess, he fought off an incumbent governor. That is a rare feat politics ingenuity in our clime. It was a testimony of his sagacity and dexterity in the turf.
It’s even more profound when considering that the incumbent governor was from the ruling party at the center.
At the formation stage of the party, Senator Al’Makura was the only governor from one of the critical legacy parties, CPC.”
The group recalled that Al’Makura was a member of the merger committee representing CPC and, in an unprecedented magnanimity, took full responsibility for funding and providing the necessary logistics for members of his former party throughout the merger talks that eventually gave birth to APC.
Therefore, the group declared that Al’Makura’s desire to lead APC “should be applauded as a man’s propensity to nurture what he laboured with others in the trenches to build.”
Buttressing its support for Al’Makura’s bid, the noted that his contributions to emergence of APC as a formidable platform that “upstaged a self-styled biggest party in Africa, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power at the center cannot be discountenanced.”
The group, therefore, solicited support of President Muhammadu Buhari, governors and party leaders for Al’Makura to emerge national chairman of APC, assuring them he would work ensure the party wins 2023 general elections.
