Following the confusion that trailed the election of the Sport Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State Chapter, stakeholders have called on wife of the State Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu to disregard any letter of award from the association in the state.
They hinged the call on the imposition of the immediate past chairman of
SWAN, Wahab Bankole to head the caretaker committee after the election has been stalemated.
They advised the wife of the governor to shun the award in the interest of peace.
“We are advising our highly revered Ondo first lady to shun the award following the controversy and crisis that chacterised our election.
“We are sure that the first lady will not be a party to illegality being perpetrated by Mr. Bankole and his cohorts.
“We say no to plan by some people to destabilize our great association”.
The election of the association had ended in a stalemate following attempts by the outgoing Chairman of the association, to extend his tenure through the backdoor as the Caretaker Committee Chairman.
The tenure of the present executive of the association expired in May 2022 while an election to usher in new leadership was slated for October 27, 2022, but the process was halted.
The Zonal Vice President of the association, Seun Ajayi-Obe, who represented the national body of SWAN announced the suspension of the election, following a petition from one of the candidates, Michael Akintunde.
Members of the association revolted and the whole process was cancelled while they maintained that a vacuum could not be left in the association as the state chapter of the association is currently without executives or a caretaker committee.
